CDF Burns Blackline in Preparation for Controlled Burn at the Eastern Site / BlacklineE1010

June 3 and 4, 2001
Creating a black line along the perimeter of the eastern site on June 3 and 4
This black line effort was more dramatic than the one on the western site because fuel loads were higher and the presence of a couple of large oaks on the site. As a result, blacklining included the area under the drip line of the oaks (see photo 1045 and 1051-3 for a particularly good example of this effort).
The blacklining was not completed on June 3 because the humidity began to drop rapidly. Once again we suspended activites and continued the next day.
In photo BlacklineE1123 we see Eric Hoffman (CDF Battalion Chief) bring the crew together to review the day's effort, the techniques used, and what the crew should have noticed in preparation for the actual controlled burn on June 5.
Unlike the western site, the perimeter burned quite thoroughly due to the increased fuel loads. This is particularly evident in the images at the end.
