The Redwood Environmental Academy of Leadership ( REAL ) program has been awarded the Community partnership award from the Stanford Office of Government and Community Relations. REAL grew out of a Stanford K-12 Initiative grant called Ecology: Learning by Doing and Making a Difference. (Dirzo and Wilber) k12.stanford.edu/research-projects/index.html and has evolved into an exemplary Sequoia Union high school district "academy" class taught by Halo Shapiro Smart (JR docent class 2011) Students at Redwood High School (the continuation school for the district) have not succeeded in the district's mainstream high schools for a broad variety of reasons and are often convinced that success in school is not possible. REAL is changing that perception and the students are excelling in a multitude of ways. Since 2007, the partners in the project have included Redwood High School REAL students and faculty, Professor Rodolfo Dirzo, Biology, Stanford, Cindy Wilber, Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve, Alan Launer, Stanford Biologist, Laura Jones, Stanford Director of Heritage Services and Stanford Campus Archaeologist , and students from the SEEDS ESA Stanford Chapter (Strategies for Ecology Education, Diversity, and Sustainability) www.stanford.edu/group/seeds/. |
