Electric Vehicle Rules
It is your responsibility to read and know these rules BEFORE checking out a vehicle:
- If you notice a significant maintenance issue with the vehicle (driving in slow mode, unusual noises, etc.) stop the vehicle and call Steven Gomez at 650-851-6812. Do not attempt to return a crippled vehicle to the field station because it could cause catastrophic damage.
- If you have not operated a cart previously, you must receive initial operating and safety instructions from a Jasper Ridge staff member.
- Do not take a vehicle from the field station if it has not completed its charge cycle and return the cart to the field station with at least a 50% charge. Running below a 50% charge can damage the batteries and the cart’s electronics!
- Always park in designated parking areas. Never leave the vehicle unattended either in the road oron the side of the road.
- Never take electric vehicles off designated roads.
- The speed limit within the preserve is 10mph. Take caution when rounding blind corners to avoid pedestrians or other vehicles.
- Seatbelts are provided in all vehicles and are mandatory.
- When parking and leaving the vehicle, always leave the key in the ignition (never take the key with you!)
- Do not take electric vehicles across the causeway (this includes the causeway bridge and Leonard’s bridge) without prior approval from a staff member.
- During winter months, it is prohibited to use electric vehicles after significant rain events (e.g., 0.25 inches within the last 24hrs). If you have doubts about road conditions, ask a staff member whether conditions are appropriate.
- During winter months it is prohibited to cross the serpentine grasslands or use Road B (SLAC corridor road).
- In summer months pay close attention to tall grass that could ignite on hot surfaces of the vehicle and avoid whenever possible! Fire extinguishers are in the back of all vehicles.
- Electric vehicles must stay within Jasper Ridge. It is not permissible to take electric vehicles on public roads.
- The four seat electric vehicles (B3 and HuntVe) are both available to check out and reserve via the wall calendar. The two seat vehicles (Polaris and Gator) can be made available to researchers and docents, but must be checked out by a staff member via our web portal.
- Be sure to remove all personal items, equipment, samples, etc. from the vehicle when done.
- Do not return the vehicle with a low charge if another person will be using it.
- When returning the vehicle, run the charge cord through the steering wheel and then plug it into the charger. This helps remind the next user to unplug the vehicle before departing. ATTEMPTING
- TO DRIVE WHILE THE VEHICLE IS STILL PLUGGED IN CAN CAUSE SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE.
- Be sure to return the vehicle key to the checkout board when finished.
