Belton, Lorien (1998) Effect of path width on the magnitude of the gradient of grassland plant species' abundance. Independent project paper for Bio 181 (Field Ecology), Department of Biological Sciences, Stanford University

Abstract:

This study compares the effect of path width on the gradient of plant species composition change with distance away from a grassland path. I examined two wide and two narrow paths at Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve and compared the magnitude of the gradient of species change away from the path. I hypothesized that wide paths, with presumably higher traffic than narrow paths, would have a more striking gradient of species change than narrow paths. The results support this hypothesis. Wider paths create a greater gradient in surrounding species' abundances than do smaller paths by a factor of almost 18.
