This paper describes the progress during the first year of a project to develop an algorithm to decompose the spectrum measured by a hyperspectral remote sensor into a collection of constituent spectra corresponding to known materials. The aim is to do this without recourse to preprocessing stages during which the effect of the atmosphere is corrected for and the materials actually present in the scene are estimated.
