Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve (JRBP) at Stanford University is seeking an Associate Director for Research to advance the preserve’s long history of diverse and outstanding field research.
This position will work under the general supervision of the Executive Director of JRBP, work closely with JRBP staff and the Faculty Director of JRBP. This position will: (1) facilitate, review, coordinate, contribute to, and monitor investigator-initiated research that is consistent with the mission and policies of JRBP and Stanford; (2) steward the preserve’s Oakmead Herbarium’s botanical collections and collecting policy, and oversee botanical volunteers; (3) contribute to the scientific, educational, and stewardship pillars of JRBP; (4) carry out research and/or monitoring in support of the preserve’s mission; (5) contribute to planning and development of scientific facilities; (6) conduct, supervise, or contribute to special projects, often non-scientific, identified by the preserve directors; (7) coordinate with individuals across Stanford to develop and/or implement research policies; and (8) communicate the significance of Jasper Ridge research. The successful candidate should be well grounded in field research and experimental design and analysis; be an effective communicator; and have training in plant ecology or taxonomy or another field that complements existing staff expertise in mammals, birds, insects, geology, carbon cycling, paleoclimate, and climate change. Experience or motivation to expand and include Traditional Ecological Knowledge and ethnobotany in the mission of Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve is welcomed.
Hiking in the field and performing tasks that include strenuous physical activity including occasional lifting of heavy objects is an essential part of the job. Familiarity with ongoing programs at Jasper Ridge will be helpful.
