Continuing Education

The Continuing Education efforts led by Gary Nielsen group has kicked off this year with two successful events. The Star Party had over 35 attendees and several local astronomers with telescopes. We are excited to have stargazing back at Jasper Ridge as one of our community events, after a 10-year hiatus. Jack Owicki and Stu Koretz led the event “Hearing in Animals” with an informative talk and selection of sound clips.

Course in Oaxaca reveals the timeless dance between culture and biodiversity

Bonus link: Many Jasper Ridge alumni docents participated in an overseas course by Professor Rodolfo Dirzo in Oaxaca. Watch their short video and read the piece titled "Course in Oaxaca reveals the timeless dance between culture and biodiversity" to learn more about their experience.

Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve’s wildfire management efforts are piling up

We completed the fuel-reduction handwork along Sand Hill Road and Westridge. The small masticator work is expected to be completed in the next few weeks along a small area along Westridge. Stanford University has reported on the burn piles that have been built as part of the overall fuel-management strategy. Please read the report to learn more about the piles and the tentative timeline. We continue to monitor the plots for environmental and wildlife data and many faculty have expressed interest in research projects related to our fire management work. Sheena Sidhu and Zander Opperman were selected to be part of the inaugural cohort of the Living Lab Fellowship Program for Sustainability at Stanford University.
